Top 20 WordPress Plugins to Build Your RSS Feeds

WordPress RSS PluginsRSS (Real Simple Syndication) enables you to syndicate the blog content in a digestible format for the readers. Assuming that most of you are using the WordPress format, we give you a list of top 20 WordPress Plugins to build your RSS feeds.

Use only those Plugins that will help in improving the blog’s performance and user’s readability.

Best WordPress RSS Plugins

To Manage RSS Feeds:

1. RSSless – If images and videos in your content feed do not format properly, you can use this plugin to weed them out with the help of short codes.

2. Feed Key – This plugin is useful when it comes to restricting feed visibility. In other words, if you want the RSS feeds to be visible only for registered users, use this plugin.

3. FD Feedburner Plugin – This plugin uses Feedburner to redirect the comments and main feed without the need to modify the RSS templates.

To Create RSS Feed Content:

4. Simple Feed Copyright – I think this is necessary for every blog feed. This plugin attaches a copyright note at the end of each RSS feed entry and protects it from copyright infringement.

5. RSS Includes Pages – This is another innovative plugin like the previous one. With this, you not only can include posts in RSS feeds but also include pages to customize the Feed.

6. RSS Footer – Through this plugin you can include copyright information in the RSS feed, along with a link back to the original posting on the main blog.

7. RSS Supplement – Like the name says, you get to add supplementary features with the RSS feed like bookmarking links, comments and others.

8. Better Feed – This is an all-in-one RSS feed plugin which allows you to add everything that you ever want like copyright information, links, advertisement, comments and others.

9. RSS Atom Avatar – If you want to personalize the RSS Feed by adding an avatar or the site’s favicon to the feed, use this plugin.

10. Feed Comments Number – If you want to track the number of comments the RSS feed is getting, use this plugin. It will add a small image on all the posts selected for the feed. This image will automatically update itself after every comment submission. If there are no comments, it will display “Add a Comment.”

To Manage RSS Feed Statistics:

11. Feedburner Widget – If you have a Google Feedburner account, use this widget to connect it with your blog. It will directly retrieve Feedburner data and display it on the blog admin area.

12. Feed Stats – With this plugin, you can track feed usage directly from the dashboard. It will also let you fix the number of days you want to track and what all things you want to track like IP, comments, users data, number of views, number of hits and others.

13. Feed Subscriber Stats – With this plugin, you neither have to login into the blog nor see the home page to see the number of subscribers. You can login to the Feedburner account and see the updated stats.

14, Feed Tracker – This plugin serves a dual purpose. First, you can apply buttons on the site for people to subscribe through the link. Second, whenever your RSS feed is updated, it will be notified and then it will also track the total subscriber count for your blog.

15. RSS Link Tagger for Google Analytics – This is again something every blog owner with a monetized blog needs; this plugin will add a special code into the RSS feeds which will then help Google Analytics to track how many readers come to your blog through the RSS feeds.

16. Disable RSS – As the name implies, this plugin will kill or deactivate all RSS content feeds because you do not need them when you use WordPress as a CMS platform.

17. Private RSS – This plugin will help you to create two RSS feeds: the first one will contain summaries of content which will be visible to everyone; the second one will contain full blog posts and can be optimized for specific subscribers. For instance, you may create a list of subscribers called ‘Client’ and then create a specific RSS feed to send to this list ONLY.

18. SOJ Tag Feed – This plugin will help you to create RSS feed for every tag stored in your blog Dashboard. For instance, if someone wants to know only about “internet marketing” from your blog, the plugin will specifically list those blogs tagged with “internet marketing” and will send it to the subscriber. It also includes copyright notices to help fight off feed scrapers.

19. Special Feed Items – If you want the RSS readers to particularly read one or more blog posts, how do you draw their attention? The Special Feed Items installs a small “heart” sign before the specific post title, which makes readers most likely to notice it.

20. Old Post Promoter – If your permalink structure includes dates, then this is not for you. In case it doesn’t include dates, you can use Old Post Promoter to randomly select blogs from the published database and make them appear on the front page of the RSS feed.

Creating RSS feed is important for a blog, especially when the blog has started to receive a good number of viewers.

Top 10 FREE WordPress Plugins for Your Blog

What are WordPress plugins?

Top 10 WordPress PluginsPlugins are add-ons or extensions applied to a set of software components, extending the abilities of a larger software application. A plugin will help third party developers to extend the main application, help add new features and also allow separation of a source code from an application because the software licenses are incompatible.

In other words, plugins are those applications that will enhance your website/blog.

Here we will give you a list containing best wordpress plugins, which are mostly suitable for your blog.

Top 10 WordPress Plugins

1. All In One SEO Pack – It is a MUST HAVE plugin on your blog. Anybody who doesn’t know the ABC’s of SEO can instantly download it free of cost, install it on WordPress and see the SEO working its wonders. For $39, you can purchase a pro-version also with unlimited license. Both the free and the paid one are allegedly the #1 Most Downloaded WP Plugin. The All in One SEO Pack creates meta-tags automatically, allowing you to pre-define other meta-tags and meta-titles on the blog page.

2. WordPress SEO – Supposedly the competitor of All in One SEO Pack and much better software, the WordPress SEO plugin has been developed by Joost De Valk of Yoast.com. With this plugin, you need not use HTML sitemaps and/or Google sitemaps. Also, with this plugin you can enter the Meta values for Bing Webmaster Tools, Yahoo! Site Explorer and Google Webmaster Tools.

3. Share This – This plugin is the life and soul for social media promotion. Its flash-based user interface and its compact nature makes it different from other social media plugins. You can choose the social media sites to include and customize it according to your preferred appearance, color scheme and others.

4. Theme Tester – If you have a money making traffic laden blog and you decide to update it with latest themes, what you will usually do is put the site on “maintenance mode” while you change the theme and other settings. This means loss of precious traffic, affiliate clicks (if any) and loss of money. But if you install the Theme Tester plugin, you need not put the blog under maintenance mode. The present design works as usual while the Webmaster tries out new design/s. Your readers will see the previous design while the Administrator customizes HTML, CSS and other components. Once you are done, you activate the new site without worrying about losses.

5. CommentLuv – Blogging and commenting go hand-in-hand. While some comments are downright spam; others are well thought of and in-depth comments. These kinds of comments coming from other bloggers do deserve a link back to their blog. How do you do it? You install the CommentLuv plugin. What this does is it extracts the latest blog post from the RSS feed of the commentator and displays it right below their comment!

6. Akismet – The Akismet plugin is now a standard plugin for all WordPress accounts, whether free or paid. The plugin differentiates between spam and real comments and shows it on your dashboard. However, it is software nonetheless and it can sometimes mark a real comment as spam. Therefore, keep monitoring those spam comments on your blog. If any comment does not seem like spam, mark it as ‘not spam’ and post them.

7. Broken Link Checker – Unless you are using the ‘Digi Link Doctor’ plugin, you do not need this free plugin. The Link Checker does scheduled scans on your blog, checking any broken links and notifying you of the same. Since Google and other search engines believe in improving user experience, leaving broken links on a site can seriously disturb this experience. Run the Link Checker once a week and fix the broken links, if any, ASAP.

8. Amazon Affiliate Link Localizer – If you are an Amazon affiliate, you definitely need this one. This plugin has been designed to help Amazon buyers localize their need. For instance, a buyer from UK will prefer to buy Amazon products from the amazon.co.uk site and not from the US site because it saves shipping costs. By using this plugin, you can specify the country-wise affiliate ids. When a user wishes to purchase, the user will be directed towards that Amazon site that is in their locale. The plugin uses the IP address of the user to make this decision.

9. FD Feedburner – Syndicating the RSS is an often overlooked setup. Bloggers don’t realize the need for RSS and how it can help create a list of RSS subscribers using their favorite RSS software. If you are not using the Google Reader, you can use the FD Feedburner from WordPress.

10. SEO Smart Links – An ideal plugin to develop internal linking on your blog. The SEO Smart Links identifies phrases and keywords in your posts and comments, and links it with other posts and pages on your blog. Internal linking is an important part of global SEO development. If you want, you can create a separate list of keywords and corresponding links so that when those keywords show up on your post, the matching URLs will be automatically posted.

2 Bonus WordPress Plugins

11. WP-DB-Backup – This plugin is necessary to backup your database. You can schedule the plugin to update database tables and email it as ZIP file on a scheduled basis. This is necessary to protect your information from any technical goof-ups.

12. Simple Tags – This plugin is used with WordPress 3.0 and 3.1. Here you can do tags management, edit mass tags, add auto tags, and receive tags suggestion from Alchemy, Zemanta, Yahoo! Term Extraction API, Local DB with AJAX request, Tag the Net and OpenCalais. The plugin is compatible with FCKeditor, TinyMCE, WYMeditor and QuickTags.

Syndicating Your Blog with RSS Feeds

Earlier referred to as Rich Site Summary, it’s now known as Really Simple Syndication. The RSS feeds are a chance for bloggers to spread and attract fresh content daily.

RSS FeedsThe RSS is a special piece of code embedded with the HTML code of the web page that automatically updates RSS subscribers with fresh content. The feeds are basically a short summary of the blog and thus, it is essential that the short summary offered is interesting to pique the readers’ interest and read the whole story.

For RSS feeds, you need a RSS reader or you can use the Google reader, and there is no limitation as to the number of subscribers you can have for your blog. You can add RSS feeds either on blogs or static websites. Here is a short manual on how to go about them.

If you host your blog on Blogger, log in to your account. Go to the “Layout” section of the chosen blog. (provided you have multiple blogs) Click on the “Add a Page Element” from the top bar and select “Add to Blog” which appears below the “Feed” element, opening the “Configure Feed” dialog box.

Here, in the “Configure Feed” dialog box, you need to copy-paste the RSS link URL from the external blog. You can view the RSS link on the eternal blog generally on the right-hand side. When you click on this link, it generally opens Feedburner address; you select this link and copy it to the clipboard.

Copy-paste this link saved in clipboard into the “Feed URL” box appearing on the “Configure Feed” dialog box and click “Continue.” In the next page, you will be asked to choose the number of feeds you want to display, date format and author name. Make these selections and click “Save.”

Click on the “Preview” button to check if everything is in order and if not, you can use the “Edit” button to make changes.

Most of the WordPress theme hosted blogs have the RSS installed by default. This makes it easier for beginners as they don’t have to read through complex codex.

However, some of the WordPress themes do not have RSS installed, and then you have to install it yourself. What I suggest is you read through the backend WP-Admin interface details provided by WordPress themselves. This codex explains in detail how to add RSS feed on your blog. You can add the RSS button on your themes sidebar or the footer page for display.

The RSS function varies for different themes so you have to do a bit of hit-and-trial method to check which one is working for you. Some of the WordPress themes have RSS buttons as a widget. Check in the Widget section of your dashboard. If you have the RSS widget, simply click “Activate” and all is set!

Static Websites

Static websites are those that do not have fresh content daily. They are not blogs. Unless you can write XML codes manually, you have to have RSS software for static websites. Websites like FeedForAll.com and Page2RSS.com offer RSS feed software installation for static sites.

The RSS link you get will be somewhat like http://yoursite.com/yourfeed.xml and the next time you add articles to your website, the RSS feed will be automatically updated.

Best way to monetize from RSS feeds is to syndicate your blog or website with a large number of feed aggregators. This will not only bring you valuable traffic but also provide you with very good quality and valuable back links that further help to rank your website higher on Google.

Kindle and RSS

In the last two or three years, the Amazon Kindle has made it possible for bloggers to publish your blog on the Kindle store and whenever anyone subscribes to your feed, Amazon shares a revenue percentage with you. Any blogger from anywhere in the world can utilize this tool.

But there is a downside as well – Amazon does not allow the blogger to decide the price of your blog. Amazon decides a monthly subscription fee and the blogger gets a 30% share. This may not seem like a great amount of money but as your content reach widens and subscribers increase, you get to earn more.

You need to create a new Amazon account even if you already have an existing one, fill out the form, add the blog RSS feed and submit. Once Amazon approves the blog, it will be available to Amazon Associates and all Kindle users on Amazon Store.

Syndicating your blog with RSS feeds is another way to make money online. Most bloggers and advertisers publish small ads in a non-intrusive manner and when the RSS subscribers click on them, the blogger earns. Of course, some readers may feel put off seeing the ads but that’s a risk one has to take.
